But at least I saw her before she made it across the road.  She had an accomplice this time……so you ask (I know you want to:)) Why does the cow cross the road ?  To get to the other side where the HAY is of course.  Silly thing is that once I did find the ranchers, they told me they have been feeding the cows a long ways away….and pointed perhaps a quarter mile down the road.  The cows broke through the fence across the street and get into the yard there, then venture onto the road.  Aghhhhh.  At least now they are replaced in their own pasture, it is now dark, and everyone could go home.

Ah.

The cow the other day......our snow since melted

Now it is time for bed.  Heated blankets are about the best thing ever invented in my opinion.  Mine is waiting for me……… Night all !

Our little Christmas tree

Simple Christmas today.  The weather is unseasonably nice.  I just want to say that I  appreciate each and every one of you who touch my life.  Thank you for being there.  For being part of things.  I wish you all a wonderful holiday season.  I say this next year will be better than the one we have just survived.  2011 will be a good year ! (Why ? Because I SAY SO !!! )

Enjoy your family and friends.  Tell those that matter to you that you love them.  Sometimes distance prevents celebrations together, but know that I love you all.

Be safe and  enjoy each and every minute !  I do !!!!

Aghhhhh..........my truck's left rear tire

My truck had a tire come apart…….Five people stopped to see if they could help – offers of changing the tire to offering to call for help.  Two we knew. One snow plow driver at work for CalTrans.  He had to drive all the way down to the intersection a mile away and back.  Geez, who would have thought ?  Small town you know…….I even got an email from a friend who saw us talking to a California Highway Patrol who stopped to see what we needed.  My friend asked if we were ok, if I had been stopped for speeding 🙂 Nah……..so aside from a shredded tire, the road service fellow put on my good spare.  The weather cooperated, it was cold but not raining or snowing.  We got home finally, thankfully.  I am now just getting to making my dinner.  Now I will be hunting for used tires for my truck.  Always something to do….. enjoy your evening all !

"Can I come in ?" cow on mom's back step

One of our neighbors cows came to stay overnight.  She got out of the pasture across the way and was on the road (shudders).   Since  mom’s very long driveway was right there……the rancher cornered the cow there.  There was traffic and it was snowing pretty hard, and LOTS of ice.  Not safe to try and herd her home. While she was here all she did was wander around and nibble grass…..and look in the sliding glass door.  And the front window.  I did however convince her not to get up on the deck in front.  The ranchers came this morning and herded her home.  Interesting.  Different.  Messy.  I knew that about cows though 🙂

Breakfast with our mustang Charm

Charm didn’t care, the cow had her own hay, but it didn’t stop her from giving the cow “the look” as you can see.  I only use my sled to feed from when there is snow and ice on the ground – but since the wind was blowing, I decided to use the cart anyway so as not to scare the cow.  She was BIG.  Didn’t need to startle her.

Inspecting my feed cart and fork.......not impressed

The cow spent a lot of time looking in the dining room slider.  This was Jerry mom’s big cat when he noticed the cow outside the door.

"WHAT is THAT??" says the cat.

When the cow first saw me behind the house, she was looking inside at mom.  I called her, brilliantly saying “Hey cow, come here”…next thing, the cow is approaching quickly. Ack!  Not quite the response I expected.  Once she saw I didn’t have anything for her, she went away just as quickly.

Cow heading for home.

The rancher asked if she broke anything…..nope.  Just lots of cow pies left behind.  The rider also asked where the propane tank was, he didn’t want the cow to “get involved” with it as he herded her out.  Interesting.  The older rancher asked if they owed us anything for “keeping the cow” ha.  No.  He gave us a box of chocolates for our trouble, wished us Merry Christmas and thanked us again.  Seriously though, keeping huge animals off the road is something I am neurotic about.  Having seen the results of car vs horse and car vs cow before in my lifetime, there is no question about helping. None at all.  Glad to help you Mrs.Cow.  It was different and fun – at least this once.

Dawn over Honey Lake, December 2010

Beautiful even if it is shot over our neighbors property across the street.  I am always very aware of where there are posts, wires, buildings etc.  Today I had to just shoot. This next one is of our usual morning birds waiting.  Mostly blackbirds, some starlings.  The doves were apparently still in bed somewhere 🙂  No owls last night, it was very quiet.  The night before, they had a big conversation from tree to tree, then finally in the home nest near our house.  Interesting creatures owls are.

Birds on the wire

I keep having not quite a recurring dream, more like the same theme.  Not quiet sure what it means.  Likely it means I have to work more on my book, and keep my thoughts going in the right direction, not down a rabbit trail or six – if you understand what I mean 🙂

Stay warm and remember to tell the people you have in your life you love them.  Life is so fleeting…………..

Hooot Hoooot!!! We're baaaacckkkk !

Yes indeed.  (Along with the WordPress fake snow…)  There is an owl in the tree above, not far from the bottom of the shot.   The great horned owl pair have returned.  Each evening at dusk, the come back and are apparently reclaiming the nest in the tree by the house.  It was an adjustment to make when they first moved in a couple of years ago, but when they are gone after the owlets fledge, it is too quiet without them.  So, now they are back, and I hoot back at them.  The male swooped down over my head the first time I did that (I like to mimic the critters, apparently a bit too well for his liking I guess).  Fun though 🙂  Not a great photo, but I swear that bird knows when I get the camera out, so it is always from a distance with the camera phone.

Have baking to do, hoping to get to the Susanville Symphony dress rehearsal tonight for the Christmas program later this week. Yay !

Rained lightly all night, quite a change from snow.  Supposed to be in the 50’s this week.  Yep, quite different.  Stay warm and enjoy your day !
