Mine That Bird, winner of the Kentucky Derby will be going on to the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico in Baltimore Maryland.  His connections said he came out of the race in great shape, and will stay at Churchill Downs until May 12thor so, then on to Baltimore.  Despite the usual mouths saying “he can’t win, or he won’t run well”, we have racing because of what “may” happen.  The horses don’t know if they are supposed to win or not.  They don’t know if they are stakes winners or claiming horses.  They run because they are horses, and that is what they love to do.  With or without a jockey on their back, they love to run, and race each other.  Nothing is set, no one wins every time, nor does anyone lose every time out.  When the gates open, each horse has a shot to win.  The race will be run, and there will be a winner.  And it may just well be Mine That Bird.

Good for them.  I appreciate their love of racing more than I can say.  If the horse wasn’t ready, they wouldn’t go.  When asked after winning the Derby if they thought they had a shot to win, the trainer said “Yes, that is why we drove here !”   One owner said he hoped for 6th or 7th place, and the other owner said he “didn’t have no feelings at all now, he was numb”.  In shock more likely !  Congratulations to the whole Bird crew 🙂 and good luck at Pimlico.
